On August 29, the Institute for Muslim Mental Health (IMMH) hosted a mental health awareness event featuring Muslim artists Jaami Baig, Zaina Berri, Sabrina Ali, Faraz Mahmood, Farah Qureshi, and Zain Ali Shamoon. The featured artists included one comedian, three poets, and two singer-songwriters. Each artist used their creative talents to reflect on mental health and raise awareness in a unique and meaningful manner.
The event took place at Qazzaz Coffee, a local cafe in Allen Park, Michigan. The cafe was transformed into a lively space that allowed artists to address the audience comfortably and generate conversation. Attendees had the opportunity to collectively reflect on the importance of mental health and the meaning of establishing community engagement. The event invited individuals to connect with others who share their passion and build relationships after a long work week. Community gatherings are essential to continue generating conversation, encouraging peer support, and advancing mental health advocacy.

Mental health awareness can be established in many ways. Through creative expression, IMMH can connect with people in ways that resonate with their understanding of mental health and the struggles they may endure. Through “Muslim Artists for Mental Health”, art provides a way for individuals to communicate messages that may be difficult to express, share their personal journeys through poetry and music, and reach new audiences. Each artist explored their relationship with mental health through their unique creative style, using comedy, poetry, and songs to engage the audience and connect with shared experiences.
IMMH plans to continue hosting events for local community members. By creating welcoming events for people to gather, we hope to provide educational spaces, encourage conversations about Muslim mental health, and help promote access to resources.
